What to Wear: Cute and Easy Summer Looks

What a great time of year it is!  The days are long and beautiful and the nights are warm and lovely.  It’s time to get out and take a walk, go for dinner, see a show, meet friends, have a drink or see a concert.  Don’t stay in and don’t wear your old t-shirts, stretchy pants or sweats.  This is the best season for cute and easy dressing.  Put on a comfortable but adorable dress, add some sandals or even flip-flops, a cardigan and hit the town!

Or, get yourself a bohemian looking top (see my blog Look of the Week: I still Love Boho-Chic for more ideas), like the pretty Akiko print shown above. Then add your favorite skinny jeans or pants, some bangles and sandals and you look chic, pretty and hip.  Also, see my blog Look of the Week: Jeans with Flattering Tops for more ideas on how to pair your jeans with great tops that are attractive, fashionable and flattering.

Though, I must say my heart continues to yearn for more and more dresses and summer weather is so perfectly suited to wearing a dress.  See my blog Why Are You Always Wearing a Dress? to see why I love this article of clothing oh sooo much!

And, I love the two designers dresses pictured on the top — Kate Spade, who can do much more than design the great, simple purse.  Her company now does great clothing pieces that have a real retro look and feel.  See them at katespade.com.  The purple dress pictured above is by Anna Sui, whose designs I have loved for years.  I wrote about her and her work on my blog,  Anna Sui – Boho Perfection.  She continues to design great looking and flattering “works of art” that have an unique look and great tailoring.

These three pieces are colorful and easy-to-wear, yet different enough so you won’t see yourself coming and going.  The yellow dress on the left is from forever21.com — they have many choices for sundresses and easy tops in staggeringly cheap prices (under $25!).  The top in the middle, available at shopbop.com, is by Joie.  And, the adorable, have-to-have dress in the Egyptian-eque print is by Nanette Lepore.  Nanette has some awesome looks coming out right now in stores and online (bloomies, saks, neimans) and continues to design really great, feminine looks.  Please see my blog about Nanette Lepore’s Spring 2009 designs.

Basically, summer is a time to be free of conventional clothing.  But that doesn’t mean to look like a slob.  This is the best season for not feeling confined in your clothing, for adding color and personal style.  And, unless you’re going to work, the opera, or a dressy affair, you can wear simple, easy sandals or flip-flops with just about anything.    Enjoy!
