What to Wear to Work
Putting together a fashionable and sensible work wardrobe is essential for every woman. Major designers understand this and make suits, pants and dresses that can go into the office a part of almost each collection, no matter the season. The outfits above are from Prada, Bottega Venetta and Chanel. Gorgeous, pricey and wondeful, exciting looks for work.
Take these ideas and make them your own, with looks that come from your local department store. It’s easier than you think. A great black suit is necessary for everyone. It’s a great any-day-of -the-week look and always works. Add a simple white blouse, pumps and a great bag, and you’re ready to face any challenge. A simple dress works well and can be accessorized so that you can wear it weekly. Add a jacket, a cardigan, pumps, boots or sandals (depending on your line of work and the season), a great necklace or gold watch, and voila, you’ve got a great and comfortable look.
My advice for all working women: Don’t wear your skirts or dresses too short. So, what’s too short? Depending on your age, your legs and your career path, just above the knee is the shortest you should go for work EVER. If you are more comforable in hose, get some great Donna Karan very sheer ones for warmer weather or any time of year. For winter, I still love opaque or semi-sheer tights in black or if wearing a simple dress, you can go with a slightly patterned tight.
Here are some simple, inexpensive and flattering looks for work:
Check out Dillards online, banana republic, Theory suits and dresses, Neiman Marcus and spiegel.com to find some affordable outfits in many sizes. Elie Tahari makes lovely suits at different price points and Anne Klein’s suits are well-made and fit great.
Also, remember that good shoes and a classic purse/bag are very important. Go for quality not quantity in these areas.
