Look of the Week: Jeans with Flattering Tops

Whether they are flared at the bottom, straight-legged or high-waisted, jeans can look fabulous or horrendous.  You need to be really honest about your body and wear your jeans so that you are enhancing your assets and not displaying your flaws.

If you can wear tight jeans with little tops and you are over 35 — bravo!!!  However, for most of us, even young women, it’s important to beware of the belly overhang (otherwise known as the muffin top) or the thunder thigh.

Whenever I wear jeans, I find a flattering top to show off my slimmer areas and to cover areas that I’m not as crazy about.  Jeans can be so sexy and comfy.  But for many women, jeans can make you look matronly, heavier than you really are and as if you’re trying much too hard.  I have always loved a simple black top with a pair of jeans — t-shirts for day and more dressy black tops for evening.

I wear my jeans like regular pants; I want them to be comfortable, flattering and free from panty lines.  If I wear my teeny jeans, I always wear a looser fitting top (but I’m careful not to choose tops that have a “maternity” feel to them).  See the pictures on this blog for ideas.

You also do not need to spend a fortune on a pair of jeans.  If you have trouble finding jeans that fit your hips and your waist, buy to fit your hips and have a tailor take them in (only a tailor who knows how to do this so it doesn’t show).  If you need the sizing for your waist, buy to fit the waist and have the legs made thinner.  As I’ve said before, finding a great tailor is top priority for anyone who wants a great wardrobe.

Call me for help with jean shopping and remember that following a trend is only a good thing if that trend is right for you!
