Look of the Week: A Big Necklace Adds Big Charm

Big Necklaces are really in style for Spring 2009.  I have always loved big, beaded and bold necklaces — see me pictured above in one of my own creations — and this season, I am almost overwhelmed by the choices.

I have clipped some Spring 2009, ready-to-wear, fashion shots from Dries Van Noten (with black turban), Lanvin (cream beaded necklace), Anna Sui (colorful necklace with stars) and Burberry Prosum (green necklace over cocktail dress) just to show you the possibilities.

Of course, one of my favorite sayings: “Keep it simple and just add a great necklace” really rings true for fashion right now.  Don’t run out to buy a brand new outfit for every occasion.  Purchase a great, simple and flattering dress and pair it with some fabulous necklaces.  Each one you choose will change your outfit.

Don’t be afraid to make your own — as I have done.  Go to your local bead store, flea market and find some pieces you like and string ‘em up!  Be bold and don’t be afraid to go big.  Choose colors and shapes that appeal to you and wear with confidence.

If you haven’t the time, check out Banana Republic for great, inexpensive choices.  Here’s a beauty for $125, below left.  Next to it is a flowery choice from J. Crew for $175.

Pictured below left is one of Jason Guinta’s grand creations from the Subversive line (see subversivejewelry.com).

And, this necklace above is available at Neiman Marcus online. It’s a beaded gem from Jose and Maria Barrera.

You can find a lot of wonderful choices at boutiques and department stores.  Anthropologie always has some fun pics and one of my secret places for unusual pieces is Chinatown or any shop that specializes in Tibetan jewelry.  Many of my own necklaces are fashioned from beads taken off of other Tibetan necklaces and restrung into my own style.  Watch this site for my jewelry, which I will be offering for sale.  Each piece is one-of-a -kind and made with love, especially for you!
