Party and Special Event Dressing

It’s time to think about what to wear to upcoming special events and holiday parties.  Stick to what’s comfortable but stylish, of course.  Try not to overspend because we’re in a recession and because often special dresses get worn just once or twice.

If you have a great dress already that you love and have worn but want to wear again, spruce it up with a new pair of shoes or a great new necklace.  I am crazy for these Prada resort shoes (which means that they just arrived in stores, not that they are to wear to a resort, necessarily).  They’re available at Saks and cost a fortune (between $800-$1,000) but if you can afford it, they’re like Dorothy’s shoes in The Wizard of Oz, only prettier.

On the other end of the price spectrum is this great dress from Banana Republic, available in regular, petites and tall sizes for $175.  I like the accessories they show it with and would also like it very much with black tights and patent sandals.

I’m crazy for this Mint Joni Arnold dress — just adorable and available on line at net-a-porter.com for $540.  Wish I had somewhere to wear it to!

Here’s a great Alice+Olivia black and white little frock also available at net-a-porter.com (there’s a lot to choose from on that website).  I like just what they show with it, as well.  Alice+Olivia dresses are well made and fit nicely.

This is the perfect party dress. So ladylike and classic.  It’s available at Barneys New York.  They call it the Sweetheart Party Dress and it retails for $895.  Not a bargain but I’m sure you’d get your money’s worth from this one.  Lovely.

Here’s a less expensive LBD, available at Ann Taylor for $289 and also online in petite sizes.  It’s pretty and very shiny.  I like it but would probably keep the accessories very minimum. And, unlike their model, I suggest a less matronly hairdo — perhaps, just leave your hair long and natural or put it up but not too perfectly, if you know what I mean!
