Why I DIY

From clothing to paintings to jewelry, I have done it all myself.  I was first inspired to paint when I realized I could not afford to purchase art that I liked for my apartment after college.   I have taken a couple of oil painting classes — and could definitely use more instruction — but deciding to make art for myself has totally changed, and greatly enhanced my life.

I saw a jumpsuit on the Barneys New York website last spring.  It was simple, serene and totally sublime.  But it also cost well over $750.  I brought the picture to my tailor, purchased fabric for less than $10 and for well under $200 had a jumpsuit made to my specifications.

Last month I went to a fabulous jewelry show at Saks and tried on beautiful necklaces that retailed for thousands of dollars.  Last week I worked on a bunch of necklaces that remind of those I had seen.  I took a bunch of beads that I had accumulated over the years, broke up some inexpensive necklaces and created my own.

Next month Chelsea’s Beads in Highland Park will be featuring my paintings and necklaces in their window.  Watch my blogs for more info on this.

It wasn’t my intention to make these items so I could sell them but if that’s where it leads for awhile, I’m okay with that!

In the meantime, I plan to keep on getting inspired and to keep on creating for myself, for my own pleasure and for anyone else who takes a liking to what I make.
