Rules of Dressing

This is what I feel about rules when it comes to how to dress…just throw out the book and start fresh. There are no real rules. Of course, if you work in an office or hold a position where certain codes of behavior and appearance are necessary, you cannot show up to your job in a tank top and flip-flops. But aside from work place expectations and demands, there are no real rules of how to dress.

Clothing is one of the greatest vehicles for self-expression, so let yourself go! This does not mean that everyone dresses well or that every type of self-expression is attractive. When you view artwork, do you like everything you see? Of course not. What a boring world it would be if everything created were made to fit every taste.

However, you should be – as Shakespeare so aptly put it – true to thyself.

If you want to make a turban out of your cardigan, a la the women of Grey Gardens, go do it. If you want to wear blue nail polish or leave your hair to its natural grey, do it. But let yourself feel free in it and enjoy. Don’t do these things because you feel your supposed to but because they express who you are and what you want to show to the world.

Remember, no matter how you dress, put on your makeup and do your hair – even if you just leave everything natural and stick with jeans and t’s everyday – you are making a statement.
