Keeping Cool in Summer

Dressing for warm weather is fun. Keeping cool is key and here are some tips:

  • Instead of panties under a dress, try Spanx “shorts”.
  • If you plan to walk far on a warm day, wear shoes that allow your feet to expand and a flat shoe is not necessarily the most comfortable – it’s about the straps, the toe room and the cushioning.
  • A black dress, top or pant may seem to be warmer but if you tend to sweat, remember to think about what materials and colors will show your sweat the most. Black is usually the best color for hiding perspiration. The worst fabrics are silks, silky cotton or any type of blended fabric that has a sheen or “silky” feel. The worst colors are pastels and lighter colors, except for white.
  • Always have some way to pull your hair back, whether you start out that way or not. I never leave my house without ample ponytail holders, especially as the weather warms up.
  • Longer shorts (near or at the knee) are great and look good with loose, summery tops or if you’re in good shape, slim-fitting tops. Don’t wear short shorts if you’re beyond the teens or early twenties. It’s not appetizing on just about anyone. If you’re dying to show great legs, put on a skirt..
  • This summer’s gladiator sandals are fabulous and look wonderful with everything, including long shorts, dresses, cropped pants, etc… I love them on everyone. Get an inexpensive pair at 9 West or go for the gold at Barney’s.
  • There is nothing more lovely than a simple white cotton dress with some turquoise goodies.
  • For work, make sure you layer, so that in air conditioning you’re all set.
  • A cardigan tucked away in your bag is important for everyone. Even grocery shopping in the summer can be like a visit to Antartica, when the temp outside is 80 or above.
